Hi All,
You might think of something being digital as a new thing that only happened in the past 20 years, but the differences between Analog and digital go back as far as 3400 BC. Below are some of the different objects over the centuries and what they would be classified as:
A smartphone is digital because it processes all information using binary code (0s and 1s). It stores things like photos, messages, and apps as discrete data rather than continuous signals. Everything it does (touch input, sound, and display) is converted into and handled as digital information.
The Antikythera mechanism is not digital because it operates through continuous mechanical motion rather than discrete binary values. Its gears physically represent changing positions and ratios, which vary smoothly instead of switching between fixed states like 0s and 1s. It functions as an analog device that models astronomical cycles through continuous movement.
